Stephen Carmody is a freelance scenic designer and art director.
Credits include art direction for John Mulaney: Baby J (Netflix) and over 30 musical performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He earned an Art Directors Guild Award nomination for his set design work on Hasan Minhaj: The King’s Jester (Netflix).
With over a decade of experience, Stephen has collaborated with design firms Fireplay, Hotopp Associates, Poleshuck Design, Clickspring, and Batwin+Robin. Contributing as a designer, draftsperson, and render artist, Stephen works on a wide range of projects, including concerts, amusement parks, branded events, broadcast studios, and immersive environments.
Stephen designed the interactive theater at The Fire Zone, New York City’s fire safety learning center, in midtown Manhattan. As Scenic Coordinator for Norwegian Cruise Lines, Stephen designed and adapted scenery for multiple Broadway-style musicals. Additionally, he spearheaded the design for PBR’s viral marketing campaign PBR: The Place, transforming three motel rooms into unique, beer-themed experiences.
Stephen’s extensive Broadway experience includes serving as Associate and Assistant Scenic Designer on productions such as Gutenberg! the Musical, Some Like it Hot, Shucked, Ain’t No Mo’, 1776, Diana: The Musical, Escape to Margaritaville, and Anastasia. He was the Associate Scenic Designer for the national tours of The Prom and The Band’s Visit, and Escape to Margaritaville . Off-Broadway, Stephen has designed over 25 productions for theater companies including Fox Valley Rep, Bailiwick Chicago, Steep, Stage Left, Theater at the Center, Milwaukee Rep, Remy Bumppo, Bucks County Playhouse, Keen Company, Encompass New Opera Theater, 59E59 and BAM.
Awards and honors include The John Murbach Scholarship for Collaborative Design presented at the 2010 Michael Merritt Awards, an Equity Jeff Award nomination for Best Scenic Design for Broadsword, and the 2014 Broadwayworld.com Chicago Award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Sweeney Todd. Stephen’s work was also showcased at the 2011 Prague Quadrennial.
An advocate for creativity as a problem solving and learning tool, Stephen has served as an adjunct professor at Long Island University, lectured and designed at The New School, and taught at Opera for All: an educational program empowering public school students to develop and produce original operas.
Stephen is a graduate of The Theater School at DePaul University and a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829.
